Why “Parents Of Toddlers” Parking Exists

As a mom, I have long appreciated shopping at our local Giant supermarket. My kids love the car-shaped grocery carts, complete with twin steering wheels, and hunting for Marty the robot. I always grab them a banana from the “free fruit for kids” bin to snack on while we shop. And, when I can, I always try to park in one of their designated “Parents of Toddlers” parking spots.

This is not to be confused with their “Expectant Mothers” parking spot which, having permanently moved on from that particular stage of life, I would never use. I utilize the “Parents of Toddlers” spaces at every opportunity, however- they’re located close to the store entrance in a flat section of the lot, where I never have to worry about my cart rolling away as I simultaneously try to load my grocery bags and my kids into the car.

On my most recent grocery run, I pulled into just such a spot, of which there are three. I hauled the requisite toddler out of the car, stood by while she debated which color “car cart” she wanted, and then headed inside.

We exited the store a leisurely thirty minutes later with four full grocery bags in our cart. As I stationed the cart next to my car, I noticed a small sedan parked in the “Parents of Toddlers” spot next to mine. I…
