The Abortion Laws We Deserve

Where we go from here.

I wasn’t going to write this. I really wasn’t. After reading that heartbreaking final sentence of the three liberal justices’ dissent, after furiously nodding along to all of the heartfelt social media posts about body autonomy and IVF and how gay rights are next, after attempting to calculate how much I could possibly afford in monthly donations to the NNAF- I simply did not think I had anything valuable to add to the conversation.

So now I am here only to say: it happened. The day we most feared is here. One more Instagram story, one more anger emoji, and even one more dollar donated to the many worthy organizations fighting for reproductive justice won’t change that.

So now we must turn inward.

I disagree wholeheartedly that abortion rights should be left up to the states. I wanted nothing more than to see Roe v. Wade codified into law. Alas, that’s not where we are, so we must work with what we’ve got.

Your ability to access reproductive healthcare now rests solely your governors and your state legislatures. If abortion is truly an issue that you care about, even if you’re conservative in other ways, it’s time to put that aside. We have prioritized other issues for too long, and at our peril.
