I was working at Smirnoff’s PR firm at the time. I clearly remember my boss, with a straight face, having to talk about this “phenomenon” (his word) at an internal meeting. I can confirm that Smirnoff (probably) wasn’t the catalyst for it, but I didn’t get the impression that they hated it either.
